A new directive passed by the European Parliament earlier this week requires manufacturers to use USB-C in universal charging ports for all products in Europe by the end of 2024.
Ghuman believes most of Apple's new products will be converted by the end of 2024. He claims the iPhone 15 will have a USB-C port in the fall of 2023, a year before EU regulations. The ipad, currently the only Lightning ipad, will start using USB-C by the end of this year.
AirPods and Magic Mouse, the Magic Box and the Magic Tracking pad will all have to be converted in the new release, Mr. Ghuman said. He expects Apple to roll out some major Mac upgrades next year, including the iMac and Mac Pro.
While all of Apple's products will use USB-C, Mr. Ghuman said he believes USB-C will last less than a 30-pin iPod plug or Lightning, "at least for iphones." The iPod connector and Lightning will run on new Apple phones for about 11 years, Gurman insisted. "Apple's future is wireless, and a version of AirPower, which was canceled in 2017, will be done in 10 more years."
He added: "Over the next few years, Apple will make a full transition to the iphone and ipad, which will significantly avoid those EU regulations with USB-C ports."
